Widely regarded as the best player not in the NHL in 2005-06, Evgeni Malkin led Metallurg Magnitogorsk to the 2005-06 Russian Super League regular-season championship. The team scored the most goals in the league (175) and gave up the least (75), which set a league record. In addition, the team’s 29-point margin in the standings over second-place AK Bars Kazan established a new league standard.

Malkin finished third in league scoring with 47 points (21+26) despite missing five games to play for Russia at the World Junior Championship. Only 19, he finished second in the league in goals and third in assists. He added 46 penalty minutes as well. He collected 15 points (5+10) and 42 penalty minutes in 11 Russian Super League playoff games.

Malkin shined on the international level. He was the second-leading scorer at the World Junior Championship as he racked up 10 points (4 goals, 6 assists) in six games and was named tournament’s top forward and MVP.

At the 2006 Torino Olympics, he tied Alexei Kovalev for second in Russia team scoring with two goals and four assists in seven games.

He registered nine points (3+6) in seven games for Russia at the World Championship. He tied for the team lead in scoring and was named one of Russia’s top three players at the tournament.

For his career, Malkin tallied 17 points (9+8) in 12 games at the Under-18 World Championship. He added 20 points (7+13) in 12 games at the World Junior Championship the past two years.

Malkin left his Russian team in August of 2006. Signed with the Penguins in September.
